INFORMATION ABOUT POLAND

Poland is one of the larger countries in Europe. Its territory measures 312,685 km2 (Table ? with information on the land area and population of Poland). It has a two-level administrative division: first it is divided into 49 voivodships which are then divided into 2,283 communes. The territory of Poland is compact and resembles a circle. It lies in the basin of the Vistula and Oder rivers, in the European Lowland and between the Baltic Sea and the arc of the Carpathian Mountains. Farthest to the south lies Opolonek Peak (49o north latitude). Farthest to the north is the Rozewie Cape (54o50' north latitude). A point farthest to the west lies at 14o07' east longitude and farthest to east at 24o08' east longitude. Poland lies in the mid-latitudes which determines its climate, plant cover, soils, etc.
Poland is situated between Western Europe, dismembered, divided into many geographical regions, and Eastern Europe, which is more homogeneous. The geological build of the country and the surface features within it are common to each of the above-mentioned parts of our continent. On the one side ? in the south and southwest ? one can easily discern terrain which has very diversified surface features with younger and older mountain complexes, characteristic of Western Europe; on the other side ? in the northeast and east there is the rather homogeneous terrain of the East European Platform.
Our country is generally composed of lowlands. The average altitude is 173 m, while for all of Europe, which is the lowest continent, it is 292 m. Lowland territories take up 91.3% of Poland, highlands 7.7%, while mountainous terrain only 1%. It should be stressed that resulting from the glacial activities even the lowlands are hilly, for example the lake districts. Only in the central areas of Poland there are typical plains. One of the characteristic surface features of Poland is that belts of hills and lowlands occur one after the other, in the same direction as the parallels of latitude.
